Acid Base Balance

Trista working on her muscle ups...Looking Good!!

Acid Base Balance

One of the most important jobs for our body is to keep us in homeostasis. Homeostasis is the ability of the body to maintain a condition of equilibrium or stability.  The body needs to maintain a balance in order to be in good health.  A few ways it can maintain its acid base balance is  through buffers in the blood, through the excretion of carbon dioxide through the lungs and the filtration of acids and waste through the kidneys.

The goal is to help the body maintain the balance in the blood by eating more alkalizing foods than acidic ones.  Alkaline foods are foods that raise the amount of oxygen that your blood takes in. The most alkalizing foods are green leafy vegetables, and fruits.  Acidic foods are meat, poultry, dairy, grains and legumes.  It is generally accepted that you should eat four times as much alkalizing foods than acidifying ones. Foods that are rich in water and tend to be more alkalizing are easier to digest. In fact constipation is a sign that the body’s acid/base balance is being upset.

Below is a link to a table that lists the acid, base values for 114 common foods.

Hey Guys! Good Job in the last few weeks! I’m seriously Impressed!

Does anyone have any great Paleo Breakfast ideas, I’m not sure I can choke down anymore eggs! ( ok, that was kind of dramatic…., but seriously!)

Terry and I have a baked egg dish that is easy to make and to re-heat for a quick and easy breakfast after the 6 am workouts (which I am sorely missing due to my knee being fouled up yet!).

Take a large baking dish, spray with a non-stick cooking spray. Cover the bottom of the dish with kale, torn from the stalk. Take any kind of veggie, like squash, asparagus, green beens, red peppers, mushrooms, brocolli, brussel sprouts, etc and layer on top of the kale. Break a dozen eggs into the blender, add some coconut milk and seasoning and give it a whirl!Pour the egg mixture over the veggies and bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.

Prepared ahead of time, this dish gives the two of us four days of breakfast. Top with avocado, salsa and a couple of strips of bacon or a turkey/venison sausage patty along with a leftover grilled yam and you have a delicious and filling feast!
